OKIR in its Various Forms. OKIR symbolizes the Maranao visual art design which the MSU brought to the national and global attention during its formative years. The “Okir phenomenon” consequently brought about the introduction of the other aspects of the Maranao cultural heritage. Most of MSU’s publications were instrumental in the striking recognition of the Okir and other Maranao art designs.
The ASEAN Journals’ typeface was copied from the Samporna Lettering that was originally designed for MSU by Dionisio G. Orellana, MSU’s Pioneering artist-illustrator. It was called “Samporna” by Dr. Mamitua Saber, MSU’s scholar and “man of letters.”
